"Climate Warming: Less Water, Cooked Fish"
On June 20th - 22nd this year, the BCLSS took on a prevalent theme for its 11th annual conference at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan (UBC-O) campus in Kelowna.
Located within Canada's only desert, the Okanagan Valley will likely be dramatically impacted by climate change. The conference brought together presenters with expertise on various aspects of climate change and its effect on lakes, fish and, of course, people.
The weekend began with a Friday social wine & cheese hosted by the BCLSS. Saturday was a full day of presentations that covered topics such as "Effects of Climate Change on Stocked Lakes in BC", "The Influence of Climate on BC's Lakes", and "Adapting to Impacts of Climate Change & Reducing Emissions". Saturday evening consisted of a barbeque dinner followed by a keynote presentation by Dr. John Wagner on "Water Management in an Era of Scarcity".
Sunday morning involved a LakeKeepers course introduction that was held at Wood Lake and covered topics such as the basics of limnology and lake sampling methods. Attendees then walked to a nearby dock to practice lake sampling techniques.
The BCLSS would like to thank the BC Ministry of Environment, Water Stewardship Division for its generous grant. This year's event was also sponsored by the Okanagan Basin Water Board.
