2022 BC Secchi Dip-In Results
Thank you to everyone that participated in the 2022 Secchi Dip-In!
This year, thanks to a generous donation from Tru Earth, we were able to provide all participants with a pack of plastic free laundry strips, and one lucky participant one a grand prize, also from Tru Earth. In BC, we had a record number of participants with an increase of 18 dips and 16 lakes from 2021.
The Secchi Dip-In is an annual event that takes place during Lakes Appreciation Month. It is an international event where volunteer monitors across North America collect a “snapshot” of the water quality in their local lakes.
The data collected are used to assess trends in transparency of waterbodies in North America. The Secchi Dip-In began in 1994 to
demonstrate that volunteers can provide accurate, consistent information for lakes. Since the North American Lake Management Society took over the Secchi Dip-In, there has been an annual increase in the total number of participants, peaking in 2018 with a total of 2205 participants. Transparency (clarity) is a good indicator of the impacts from human activity on the land surrounding a water body. If transparency is measured through the season and from year to year, trends in transparency can be observed. It can serve as an early warning that activities on the land are affecting water quality.
