2022 Secchi Dip-In!
It’s that time of year again! The annual Secchi Dip-In is just around the corner, so it’s time to dust of your Secchi disks and organize an event with your local lake stewardship group, or with friends and family during the month of July.
The Secchi Dip-In is an international event where volunteer monitors take a transparency measurement at least one day during the month of July (Lakes Appreciation Month). These values are used to assess the transparency of volunteer-monitored lakes in North America. Lakes Appreciation month was started by the North American Lake Management Society to focus attention on the value of lakes and the threats they are facing.
We have data sheets for returning participants and new participants. The forms can also be found on our website. You can print the forms and scan them or fill them in directly on your computer. Completed forms can then be submitted on our website or sent by email to marie@bclss.org. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the forms and submission platform!
Participation in the Dip-In has been steadily decreasing over the years. Please consider participating and pass along this information to anyone that may be interested. The data collected is very valuable! View the 2021 Secchi Dip-In Map to see which lakes were sampled last year.
Watch this how to video from Lake Windermere Ambassadors and let us know if you have any questions about taking a Secchi reading!
