Secchi Dip-In 2019 Results
The Secchi Dip-In takes place during Lakes Appreciation Month, July 1st to 31st. The Dip-In is an international event during which volunteers collect a snapshot of the water quality in their area. Volunteers from across North America have participated in this event for over twenty-five years.
Since 1994, more than 10,000 trained volunteers have generated 42,000 transparency records, giving a glimpse of lake water transparency at sites across North America and the world (NALMS, 2018). Transparency trends serve as an indicator of changing water quality.
Since 2010, there has been a 35% decline in the number of BC lakes with Secchi depth readings collected during the Dip-In. This is concerning as long-term trends are important indicators of the changes a lake is experiencing.
A goal of the Dip-In is to increase the number and interest of volunteers in environmental monitoring. Please spread the word about the Secchi Dip-In so that we can increase participation in 2020.
